Cabrera adds weight to Portugal Masters

Angel Cabrera will bring his formidable powers to the 2008 Portugal Masters at the Oceânico Victoria Clube de Golfe on Portugal’s Algarve coast, from October 16-19. Cabrera, the 2007 US Open Champion, has confirmed his participation in the €3,000,000 event, where England’s Steve Webster will defend the title. He may not have played in last year’s inaugural Portugal Masters, but Cabrera does boast an intimate knowledge of the Oceânico Victoria Clube de Golfe, having helped Argentina to a sixth place finish over the stunning championship lay-out at the 2005 World Cup. Cabrera and his partner Ricardo Gonzalez combined to produce a quite brilliant foursomes score of 11 under par 61 in the second round, and the big-hitting Argentine will aim to repeat that kind of performance in front of the Portuguese public in October. Cabrera became the first Argentine winner of the US Open when he lifted the trophy at Oakmont Country Club last year after holding off the challenges of World Number One Tiger Woods and the 2003 US Open Champion Jim Furyk. The Portugal Masters is part of ALLGARVE 2008, a summer programme of world class art, music and sporting events being hosted on Portugal’s south coast. The tournament will bring down the curtain on another hugely successful year of partnership between Portugal and The European Tour that will have seen three full European Tour events staged at the Madeira Islands Open BPI, the Estoril Open de Portugal and the Portugal Masters. With Portugal also staging the European Seniors Tour Qualifying School at three separate venues in November, The Tour’s partnership with Portugal continues to grow.
