Woosnam targets the Senior Masters

Ian Woosnam will return to the scene of his British Masters triumph 14 years ago as he continues his pursuit of his first European Seniors Tour Order of Merit crown at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters at Woburn Golf Club from August 29-31. The 2006 Ryder Cup winning Captain is currently €30,000 ahead of Germany’s Bernhard Langer in the Order of Merit and he will return to the Duke’s Course, where he won the British Masters in 1994, looking to extend his lead. Woosnam memorably clinched that British Masters crown by four strokes from runner up Seve Ballesteros, with the illustrious trio of Langer, Ernie Els and Colin Montgomerie also just behind. With two victories already to his name this season, the Welshman is on course to land the John Jacobs trophy given to the leading player on the Seniors Tour Order of Merit. Woosnam landed the Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship in only his third appearance on the Seniors Tour and then quickly followed that with victory at the Russian Seniors Open. He also finished second behind Peter Mitchell at the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors Open. Andy Stubbs, Managing Director of the European Seniors Tour, said: “It’s fantastic to have Ian Woosnam , the Masters Tournament champion of 1991 and the British Masters champion of 1994, going back to Woburn. We will look forward to seeing whether he can land yet another ‘Masters’ win at the Travis Perkins plc Senior Masters.”
