The trophies were presented to the two players at the Chelsea FC training ground. Didier Drogba was delighted to receive his award and commented, “This is fantastic! To be recognised by the world’s media really is an honour, especially as they can be the hardest to please and the toughest critics.” Petr Cech added, “It’s always nice to receive awards, but this one is really special as it shows that our performances here at Chelsea, both in the Premier League and Champions League, are having a global impact.” The World Football Awards 2007 were decided from votes cast by the 9,100 strong membership of the AIPS from over 150 countries across the world. Gianni Merlo, President of the AIPS stated, “These awards are unique in football, as they take into account the views of professional football media across the globe, and not just one country.” Merlo continued, “The journalist members of the AIPS report on world football 365 days a year, and as such, are best placed to objectively analyse outstanding performance.”
