Simply Red launch BMW PGA Championship

Simply Red will play an exclusive charity fundraising ‘Concert on the Course’ at Wentworth Club on Wednesday 21 May, to launch this year’s BMW PGA Championship, the flagship event of The European Tour. The exclusive ‘Concert-on-the-Course’, first staged in 2006, is an intimate, curtain-raiser to the BMW PGA Championship. The invitation-only event will take place on the 18th fairway of the East Course amongst the idyllic setting of the Wentworth grounds, with the band set to perform some of their vintage hits including Money’s Too Tight To Mention, Stars and Fairground. The concert will be the climax of the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am day, with all proceeds raised through ticket sales being donated to the players’ charity GOLFAID, supporting Sport Relief and local children’s charity, Rainbow Trust. Marking the start of the UK golf season, the BMW PGA Championship has this year attracted some of the leading players in the world. Denmark’s Anders Hansen will be seeking to defend his 2007 title but will face tough competition for the record €4,500,000 prize fund from the likes of Angel Cabrera, Paul Casey, Darren Clarke, Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Justin Rose, Vijay Singh, Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood. Former European Tour professional and acting chairman of GOLFAID, Mark Roe commented: “On behalf of all the players, we would like to thank BMW and Simply Red for enabling GOLFAID to raise much needed funds for two very worthy causes. We’re thrilled to be making a difference to both charities and hope this will be the beginning of a long-term relationship between GOLFAID and the BMW PGA Championship.” Peter Walker, General Manager, Sports Marketing BMW (UK) Ltd, said: “The Concert on the Course has been a unique opening feature to the BMW PGA Championship for the past two years. We are delighted that Simply Red will launch what promises to be another exciting week of world class golf.” The Simply Red ‘Concert on the Course’ takes place just two days after the official release of Mick Hucknall’s first solo album, ‘Tribute to Bobby’. Hucknall, one of Britain’s most successful singer-songwriters and novice golfer, announced that, after 25 succesful years, Simply Red will split following a farewell world tour in 2009, making this the last chance to see them perform live in the UK this year.
