Cabrera and Romero to take part at Wentworth

US Open Champion Angel Cabrera, and fellow Argentine Andres Romero, will bring their formidable talents to the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club, Surrey, England, from May 22-25, 2008. Cabrera became the first Argentine winner of the US Open when he lifted the trophy at Oakmont Country Club last year after holding off the challenges of World Number One Tiger Woods and the 2003 US Open champion Jim Furyk, ahead of fourth placed Niclas Fasth of Sweden. The 38 year old will be looking to repeat his BMW PGA Championship success of three years ago when he shot a final round 67 to beat Ireland’s Paul McGinley for a two shot victory, with Australia’s Nick O’Hern third and England’s David Howell, the 2006 BMW PGA Champion, fourth. He has an impressive record at The European Tour’s flagship event, having finished runner up in 2001 and again 2004 before his momentous breakthrough over the famous West Course in 2005. The big hitting South American’s challenge just fell short last year when he had to settle for joint fifth last year behind eventual winner Denmark’s Anders Hansen, who beat England’s Justin Rose in a sudden-death play-off. Cabrera will be joined at Wentworth Club by fellow countryman and rising star Romero who will be hoping to build on his impressive joint eighth place finish at this year’s Masters Tournament at Augusta National. The 26 year old, one of the most exciting talents to emerge from Argentina in recent years, finished just seven shots behind South African Trevor Immelman’s winning total of eight under par on his debut at August National. Romero, who graduated from the European Challenge Tour in 2005, took the world by storm when he finished third behind Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia of Spain in last year’s Open Championship at Carnoustie. The following week he captured his maiden European Tour title at The Deutsche Bank Players’ Championship of Europe before emulating that feat with his first success on the US PGA Tour earlier this year. He finished joint 12th last year at last year’s BMW PGA Championship following a superb final round 68. Romero captured his first title on the US PGA Tour when he won the 2008 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, with a one-stroke victory over Australia's Peter Lonard at the TPC Louisiana. The 2008 BMW PGA Championship will boast one of the strongest fields on The European Tour International Schedule, with many of the world’s best players in action. All four days will be broadcast live on BBC Television.
