Estanislao Goya got his professional career off to a sensational start when, only four months after joining the paid ranks, he won the Abierto Visa del Centro tournament on the European Challenge Tour. The 19 year old beat England’s Gary Boyd at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off at the Cordoba Golf Club after the duo had stormed through the field to tie on 12 under par 272, Goya birdieing four of the last seven holes for a 66 while Boyd went even better with six birdies in his last eight holes for a 65. The duo then returned to the par four 18th hole where a birdie three from the youngster from Cordoba itself was good enough for victory in the event co-sanctioned between the Challenge Tour and the Tour de las Americas. “I have worked very hard for this and I just want to enjoy it," said Goya, who only turned professional four months ago after winning the Tour de las Americas Qualifying School in Florida by nine shots, breaking Johnnie Miller's 32 year old course record at the Bonaventure Country Club with a sparking 61 on his way to victory. "It is a good start to my professional career. It was great to play in the last group of a big event for the first time and hopefully I will be in the same position in other big tournaments in the future," added the Argentine, who became the youngest winner in the tournament's 77 year history and picked up a cheque for €20,716 (£16,140). While the leading duo shared the closing limelight, much of the day’s earlier plaudits went to England’s James Heath who produced some truly sensational golf to post a final round 62 to move from a share of 20th at the start of the day to finish third on ten under par 274. Further down the leader board, reigning US Open Champion Angel Cabrera’s bid to win the title for the fourth consecutive year came up short. Although the 38 year old – who will defend his US Open crown at Torrey Pines in June – equalled his best round of the week with a closing 67 for a six under par total of 278, it was enough only for a share of sixth place.
